Early versions were known as the Widowmaker as they had a downward firing ejector seat. 21 pilots lost their lives. Later versions were fitted with the excellent British made Martin Baker zero zero ejector seats. Despite it's astounding speed, it's extremely short wings had a very high stall speed. It was prone to stalls and spins, and could ground loop on landings. To land safely, an approach speed of at least 207mph was required! It's fuselage was used as the basis for the Lockheed U2 spyplane albeit with new wings, a redesigned nose and redesigned empennage.
