There is a growing trend of young men from western nations travelling to the Middle East to join in jihad with various terrorist organizations (today’s terrorist group du jour is ISIS). Our nations now have to figure out how to make sure that these monsters who are joining in these gross displays of violence and terror don’t return to threaten our homes.
How bad is the “home-grown” Islamic Terrorist problem? Thus far:
At least 500 Brits have joined terrorists in Iraq and Syria.
Upwards of 700 have left France to go and fight.
More than 400 Germans are now fighting alongside terrorists in the MidEast.
And at least 50(Now Estimated To 100+) Americans have made their way to the Islamic World and become terrorists.
Thus far there is no fool-proof response.
Earlier this week British Prime Minister David Cameron began pushing for Parliament to embrace tough new sanctions that he proposed, including passport seizures and banning Brits who join these terrorists from returning to Britain.
He (Cameron) said his proposed legislation would give police officers temporary power to seize passports at the border. Secondly, he said it was key that Britain work to keep out foreign fighters who return from the Middle East and pose a threat to the nation, which recently upgraded its terror alert from substantial to severe.
Cameron said that Britain must prevent those suspected of extremism from traveling out of the country.
“Passports are not an automatic right,” he told his colleagues. He said to date, 500 people from the UK have left the country to fight in Iraq and Syria; 700 have left France to fight and Germany has seen 400 people exit to join religious extremists.
Cameron is asking for the changes essentially to prevent attacks on Britain by Islamist militants coming and going for terror training in the Middle East…
The other proposals made by Cameron are to tighten aviation security by demanding airlines submit passenger flight lists, or not be allowed to land, and to exclude British nationals from return to Britain.
Now Rep. Michele Bachmann is telling all of America what she has learned from the FBI.
The interview with Bachmann starts about 39 minutes into the program (and the entire thing is worth a listen), but the pertinent part of the interview discussing Americans who leave to go and fight for the terrorists starts at 49 minutes in.
“Two from my state were the first Americans who were fighting for ISIS,” Bachmann told The Glenn Beck Program on Tuesday. “I had gone earlier this year and asked the FBI, ‘Are there any Minnesotans that are over fighting with ISIS?’ It was classified information at the time, I couldn’t reveal it. Now everyone knows.”
“At that time, these two hadn’t been killed yet. So what I asked is, ‘OK, once they’re done fighting with ISIS, what’s going to happen if they try to return?’ And they said, ‘Well, they’ll come into the country.’ Are you kidding me? We are not going to prevent them from coming into the United States?’”
Bachmann announced that she would be introducing legislation “so that anyone with a U.S. passport who’s gone to fight with ISIS or any of these jihadist groups, they are prevented from coming into the United States.”
“In my opinion, they should lose their American citizenship. Because at that point, you have turned against the United States. ISIS has declared the United States as their enemy. Once you join an enemy army … you should, by definition, lose your American citizenship, therefore your passport. You should have no ability to get back into the United States.”
What will our nations do with the threat of these terrorists who may one day try to come home?
