This is an overview of what it is: www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/thenhs/about/Pages/overview.aspx#closeIt's tax funded and belongs to every citizen of the United Kingdom, it employs 1.7 million people. When I was a child they immunised me against tetanus and other diseases. They also gave free (life saving) treatment to my great auntie when she suffered a stroke in the 1980's.

I hope your government in the UK does a better job running things than ours does over here. I guess they can get away with implementing stuff like that now that they've run most of the guns thru the shredder. They learned back in the late 1700's to not let their subjects become too heavily armed

Speaking of Guns, most of us never had guns, though if we have good reason we can get licences. If one wishes to legally own a Sterling SMG or a Glock 17 it's possible, though one would need the Home Secretary's permission and a very good excuse (a job at the Royal Armouries perhaps), however a Shotgun certificate is very easy to get, firearms certificates for hunting rifles aren't too hard to get either.
If one were to be wounded by gunshot however, NHS treatment is free at the point of delivery.
I must state that the NHS is by no means perfect, the recent Keogh review has found faults with it, but I think it's a better system than the alternatives.

If I had grown up with NHS or similar I might be more inclined to accept it as the norm.

I was born in an NHS hospital (as was my brother), I received my immunisations against childhood diseases for free from them, also had free dental care when I was a kid, had free inhalers for Asthma which in all probability saved my life. I'm very grateful that this service exists.

It's tax funded with a budget of £108.9 billion. Dental care is free for children. Adult dental care and opticians services are not free (I pay about £17 per dental checkup).
If you're ill and need an operation, it's free at the point of delivery. If you're ill and need medicine, it's free at the point of delivery. If you need A&E treatment, also free.
There are also private healthcare companies operating alongside the NHS, these include BUPA, and AXA PPP healthcare.
