They said she strangled her dog to death because she didn't want anyone else to have it. Shelley Bezanson, 28, had taken her 7-year-old dog, Diamond, to the vet to have it euthanized. The vet refused because the animal was not sick, and there was no ethical or justifiable reason to do so. Investigators with SCSO said the vet's staff had encouraged Bezanson to return Diamond to the Sarasota Humane Society, but she refused and chose to kill the dog herself. According to the affidavit, "Diamond was a healthy, friendly, seven year old, spayed female, pit bull type dog." An anonymous phone call sent officials to Bezanson's mother's home, where she told them that she "had to put her dog, Diamond, down" by choking it with the dog's own chain leash. She said she did it because she faced eviction if the dog wasn't removed, and she didn't want anyone else to have Diamond. A necropsy confirmed Diamond was strangled and suffered a prolonged, painful and cruel death. Bezanson was charged with cruelty to animals resulting in cruel death. She is being held on $25,000 bond.
