McDonalds should be free to sell a legal product and people should be free to decide if they want to buy it. If Jamie does an expose' and is able to prove the allegations, more power to him. My only question is what kind of chemistry training does Mr Oliver have? He says the meat is "filled" with ammonia. Anybody knows that one drop of ammonia can be smelled in a very large room. You could probably clear Madison Square Garden with a cupful or two. Seems like if my Big Mac was "filled" with ammonia I would taste and/or smell it.

The treatment of food with ammonium hydroxide has been listed as “generally regarded as safe” by the FDA since 1974, and was used for many years before then. There are, however, still those who question the process. Dr. Daniel Zagst of NaturalNews, for example, points out “there is no study of actual safety thresholds in food ingredients, and its safety is based on an extrapolation of data based on the normal presence of ammonium hydroxide in food, not added.” Food Insight points out that ammonium hydroxide is also used in “dairy products, confections, fruits and vegetables, baked goods, breakfast cereals, eggs, fish, beverages such as sports drinks and beer, and meats,” and that other forms of ammonia are used “in condiments, relishes, soy protein concentrates/isolates, snack foods, jams and jellies, and non-alcoholic beverages.” wafflesatnoon.com/2013/08/04/pink-slime/(btw the pic of "pink slime" in the article does not look like "slime", exactly. It look firmer than something I would call "slime". i guess "slime" attracts more attention though)

I'll tell you one damn thing: The worst thing that ever happened is when they built a 24-hr McD's about 3 minutes from my house. Had to run over there just now and get me a number 12 combo ;-)

Whatever the decision of the Food and Drug Administration they have no authority in the United Kingdom, the Food Standards Agency have different opinions about Ammonium Hydroxide.
As for Mr Oliver he isn't a Chemist he's a Chef, and a very famous and influential Chef with a chain of restaurants to his name. He's made a big deal of food standards over the last 10 years starting with his Jamies School dinners campaign which saw mechanically separated meat including Turkey Twizzlers and Chicken Nuggets taken off school menus.
