Some what as there is a large concentration of italians in the northeast they probably get it it parts of Chicago too. Long Island and NYC have a large population with Italian descent. I'm part Italian born in the Bronx my wife is of 100% Scicilian descent. so Italians elsewhere, say here in MI, wouldn't know/use the term? It seems like Italians familiar with Italian would know it regardless of how many of them have congregated in a specific area if it's an Italian term. Just to clarify, I texted one of Italian buddies and he knows and uses the word so I don't think it is a regional thing.

They were selling t-shirts....."It's GRAVY....not sauce." I bought a few to give as gifts.
